On March 31, 1989; a separate academic unit, the College of Cooperatives, formerly Institute of Cooperatives, was established by virtue of the approval of the PUP Board of Regents. In schoolyear 1989-1990, CC offered the Bachelor in Cooperatives program—a spun-off course from the PUP College of Business—to three sections of freshmen and a group of shiftees from other business courses. Romulo T. Martin and Corazon R. Mabagos were designated as the founding Director and founding area chair, respectively. In 1990, Herminia E. Manimtim was appointed head of the Extension Services and Herly Aguarino served as the officer-in-charge for the Non-traditional Study Program. In 1992, Sr. Marietta P. Demelino joined the faculty and was later appointed as head of the Research and Development Unit. The Associate in Cooperatives was introduced in 1993 as an off-campus certificate program through a partnership program with a community-based cooperative in Kalookan City. A year later, the Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Cooperatives, a two-term degree course, was approved by the PUP Board to strengthen PUP's support to the efforts towards professionalized management of Philippine cooperatives.
